It’s just they are old recordings and don’t fonjystice yp your modern day high spec system. Performance wise they are excellent but do is Rattle’s 2008 performance is equally good but in high quality audio so no distraction of poor audio. As I say get yourself the digital Concerthall service I am certain you will love it. The Berlin Philharmonic is one of if not the best orchestra in the world today and has always been top notch. The audio streaming quality is miles better than what you get on YouTube too.
Have you listened to Rattle and Barenboim performances of this work.

I did not know much of Gatti but his performance of this work was truly stunning and heartfelt.
I agree Karajan was not fully yo my liking but he is one of the best with most Beethoven works I find.
Each composer has his speciality in composers of course. I love Dudanel for Mahler for instance. Haitink for Shostakovich who wrote some pure 20th century genius symphonic and other works too. Then there is Bruckner for whom I admire the conductor the late great Haitink who performed the great 7th as his final concert with the BPO a very moving event in 2019. He sadly died in late 2021 a truly great conductor who was a gentle man with do much feeling for the music he conducted over hos long active life. He actually met and knew Shostakovich very well and thus had first hand knowledge as to Joe the composer meant his works to be performed.
I can talk to you about music for ever and share our mutual knowledge. Life without music would not be worth living for me.
Read above — they don’t do justice to your modern day high spec systems
Last sentence read how the composer meant… not Joe
